Why in the world would you move to the mountains of North Carolina? I’ve been asked that question many times by lifelong friends in New York and new friends here in the High Country. My response is always the same: because this is such an amazingly naturally beautiful corner of the earth, with seasons and a lifestyle that allows folks to actually look at you and smile, even when they don’t know you. What’s not to value about that?

I did get a flavor of this part of the country when I attended Southern Seminary in Buena Vista, Virginia but returned to New York to pursue my career. First at Ted Bates Advertising, then Grey Advertising and finally the Nestle Company in Public Relations.

Next came time out for motherhood–the best– along with volunteering at the schools my children attended. I managed my late husband’s law office and continued my school and community involvement. President of New York State PTA followed as well as Region I Vice President of the National PTA. Thirty years of advocacy taught me valuable skills that I sought to utilize in the for-profit sector.

An offer from a close friend of 35 years brought me to his family’s real estate firm where we strategized that finding homes for families relocating to the White Plains area would work well. It did. I expanded my client base to new challenges and found my new advocacy role. My real estate career has brought me more pleasure and satisfaction by far than frustration. It has covered representing buyers and sellers in rentals, coops, condos, townhouses, single family and multi family residences. I’ve enjoyed representing many clients in more than one transaction and received numerous referrals from them to their friends and business associates. Several of the home sales were conducted internationally.

Since my husband Denis and I chose to relocate to Ashe County it seems only natural to continue our real estate careers here. I have also become involved in community activities at Grace Lutheran Church. The major emphasis for me there is working with the Hospitality House team cooking dinner once a month for 60-80 homeless guests from the three county area. I also chair the Internship Committee and we have adopted an LSA ASU student. I enjoy the newly formed hiking club in Fleetwood Falls. In 2009 I worked for the United States Census Bureau.

My family is my constant source of joy and challenge and I look forward to increasing my real estate family here in the mountains. Get in touch: helen@regencypropertiesnc.com
